The Goslings began making rum blends in 1860, and within three years, they had developed Old Rum, a dark and full-bodied rum that was initially distributed only in casks and sold to those who brought their own bottles. It then became more widely available by being bottled in champagne bottles which were sealed with black sealing wax. Soon, people demanded more of the "black seal" rum, so the name was changed to Black Seal Rum.
