Since the 18th century have been distilleries in Lagavulin, but in 1816 farmer John Johnston was the first that established the first legal business. A year later a second distillery appeared, this one run by Archibald Campbell. The two joined under a Glasgow merchant, and in 1887, Peter Mackie arrived at the distillery, under whose guidance the distillery, and the name Lagavulin, was to become the last word in Islay malt.
