Zacapa rum was created in 1976 to commemorate the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city of Zacapa. Zacapa is a city in Guatemala and its name comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language and means "at the river of grass". Unlike most rums that are made from molasses, Zacapa rums are made from sugar cane. A yeast strain derived from pineapple is used in the fermentation process and brings out incredible aromas and flavors. During the distillation process, the flavor and aroma character and profile of each rum is determined.
